Zest of the Bunch

Sometimes it’s worth celebrating that phenomenon known as the ‘happy accident’. Without it, we wouldn’t have the grapefruit, which burst into the citrus family as a hybrid, the result of an orange being unintentionally mixed with a pomelo. No one knew what to make of this tarter, thicker-skinned cousin of its sweeter relations. ‘It’s a pomelo!’ people mistakenly said of it to begin with. ‘No, it’s something else – a forbidden fruit,’ others declared. ‘No, no, no – it’s one of the Seven Wonders of Barbados!’ decided the whole of the Caribbean. Then someone, somewhere, at some point, noticed that it grew in clusters, like grapes – and, from that point on, it became known as the grapefruit.

The grapefruit’s clear, bright no-nonsense

character is like the first day of spring in a bottle

An explosive mix of sweet, sour, acidic and bitter, the grapefruit has a freshness and a cleansing quality that makes it instantly invigorating on the palate. The flesh comes in pink, red and white varieties and is positively singing with antioxidants and vitamin C. It is also the juiciest of all the citrus fruits, containing an impressively hydrating 92 per cent water. It’s also rumoured to be a metabolic champion – a fat-burning, cholesterol-lowering, immune-boosting superhero.

Apart from its starring role in healthy breakfasts around the world, the grapefruits bright and sunny nature has made for a spectacular inspiration for a cologne. Grapefruit Cologne is uplifting and refreshing. It’s clear, bright no-nonsense character is like the first day of spring in a bottle. Optimistic, robust and ready for anything.
